“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom
Aneesha Reddy, Grade 9

“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom is a heartfelt and touching memoir that shares
the last lessons of Morrie Schwartz, a college professor struggling with ALS. He meets
with his former student, Mitch, every Tuesday where he talks about life’s most important
moments and themes: aging, forgiveness, and death. Morrie shares his wisdom with
Mitch, and is all for living life honestly, as well as prioritising relationships rather than
wealth or status, turning each Tuesday conversation into a session on the meaning of
life.
Albom’s way of storytelling is both honest and deep, blending times of humour and
jokes with sorrow and sentiment. The directness of the book allows Morrie’s words to
resonate with the readers, motivating them to look back on their lives and ways of
thinking. The closer he gets to death, Morrie becomes more and more positive. Some
might view this as unusual, but Morrie feels that one cannot be scared of death. He has
many mottos and quotes which are shared throughout the book, and they serve as
guiding points for readers, and for Mitch as well.
In the end, “Tuesdays with Morrie” is a reminder to accept vulnerability and cherish
relationships until the very last moment, instead of worrying about material pursuits.
