Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) – A Fresh and Heartfelt Adaptation

Neharika Reddy, Grade 11

Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019) offers a fresh, heartfelt take on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, blending nostalgia with a modern feminist perspective. Starring Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Florence Pugh as Amy, Emma Watson as Meg, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, and Timothée Chalamet as the charming Laurie, the film beautifully explores love, ambition, and sisterhood in a deeply relatable way.

Visually, the movie is stunning. Warm, golden tones, period-accurate costumes, and an evocative score create a nostalgic yet timeless atmosphere. The nonlinear storytelling adds emotional depth by juxtaposing the characters’ youthful dreams with their adult realities. However, this structure may be confusing for viewers unfamiliar with the story, as the frequent jumps between timelines sometimes lessen the impact of key emotional moments.

The film’s feminist themes feel modern and empowering, emphasizing individuality and the power of choice. Jo and Amy’s journeys, in particular, highlight the complexities of womanhood in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences. However, while Jo and Amy are well-developed, characters like Beth and Meg receive significantly less focus, leaving some viewers wishing for more depth in their arcs.

The pacing is slow at times, which may not appeal to all audiences. However, despite these minor flaws, Little Women (2019) remains a poignant and powerful adaptation—one that breathes new life into a beloved classic while staying true to its timeless themes.
