The Other Side of Truth by Beverley Naidoo
Aneesha Reddy, Grade 8

The Other Side of Truth focuses on a girl named Sade Solaja, and her brother Femi Solaja from Nigeria. They are forced to leave their home and country after their mother is murdered by government forces in order to search for safety at the very beginning of the book, and go to London, which is a place that is completely foreign and new to them. The book focuses on the harsh realities faced by the siblings, who become political refugees as they enter England. When they are in London, the two kids learn about the challenges of being refugees in a new place.
Naidoo is able to expertly describe themes of political oppression, censorship, and the journey for the truth throughout the story. The book shows Sade’s internal problems as she deals with her own problems at school, and the constant need to protect herself and her younger brother from more danger. The author has the ability to use different writing techniques (such as imagery and metaphors), as well as providing information about Sade’s cultural background, her traditions, and how she feels homesick.
In conclusion, The Other Side of Truth is extremely powerful and is a novel that leaves the readers thinking, and can resonate with them as well. It is a very good read for anyone interested in tales that show the significance of truth, justice, and honesty in a world that is known for disorder and fright.
