The Unwanteds
Aneesha Reddy, Grade 8

“The Unwanteds” by Lisa McMann lets readers travel into a dystopian world where creativity is a crime. Every year, thirteen-year-olds are labeled “Unwanteds” due to their artistic intentions which are banished to a place called the “Purgatory”. However, instead of a wasteland, the kids sent there discover “Artime”, which is a vibrant land where imagination is allowed and encouraged.
The protagonist, Alex Stowe, finds himself among the batch of the Unwanteds, and navigates a special world filled with magical creatures and spells. McMann is able to skilfully create a gripping contrast between the plain, artless society of Quill (the dystopian society), and the busy beauty of Artime. The novel explores different themes such as the significance of creativity, the importance of independence, and self-discovery.
Even though the plot is engaging and rapid, the real magic is hidden in the detailed building of both worlds, and the relatable characters as well. Alex’s journey, which transitions from a scary outcast, to a courageous commander is extremely inspiring.
“The Unwanteds” is a good read, specifically for anyone who believes in the power of imagination. It is a thrilling adventure which reminds us to showcase and be proud of our special talents.
